Dr. Taemin Oh Joins Columbia Neurosurgery as a Pediatric Spine Specialist
We are thrilled to announce the newest addition to our esteemed team at Columbia Neurosurgery: Dr. Taemin Oh. As the Co-Director of Complex Pediatric Spinal Neurosurgery and the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgical Scoliosis, Dr. Oh brings a wealth of expertise and a compassionate approach to pediatric patient care.
Dr. Oh is dedicated to guiding young patients through their surgical journey and advocating for their needs. He specializes in treating pediatric scoliosis and spinal deformity, spina bifida, tethered cord, cerebral palsy, spasticity, Chiari malformation, and cervical deformity. His proficiency spans both traditional open surgery and minimally invasive, fusionless surgeries, including vertebral body tethering.
A proud alumnus of Yale University, Dr. Oh earned his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco, where he had the privilege of training with Columbia Neurosurgery's Chief of the Spine Division, Dr. Dean Chou. Following this, Dr. Oh pursued fellowships in both pediatric neurosurgery and pediatric spine surgery at the University of Utah and Shriner’s Hospital for Philadelphia, respectively. This rigorous training has uniquely equipped him to tackle the complex challenges faced by some pediatric patients, making him the only pediatric neurosurgeon in New York City with this dual specialization. This expertise is reflected in his dual appointment with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia.
"I am beyond thrilled to have Dr. Taemin Oh with us on our team at Columbia Neurosurgery and Och Spine.” says Dr. Chou. “He is an outstanding surgeon, gifted researcher, and a thoughtful, meticulous clinician. With his prolific educational pedigree of Yale University for college, UCLA, UCSF, University of Utah, and Shriner's Hospital for Children, he has the unique training with many of the leading experts in pediatric spine diseases and spinal deformity. There is probably no other person in the country with such extensive training in all-around complex spinal surgery, the entire gamut of pediatric neurosurgery, and complex pediatric scoliosis and spinal deformity. I am looking forward to seeing him develop into a leader and world expert in pediatric spine."
With an impressive focus on improving the care of the young patients, Dr. Oh’s research aims to advance surgical techniques, particularly in vertebral body tethering (VBT). He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications in leading neurosurgical and spine surgery journals. Recently, he submitted a significant manuscript examining the long-term outcomes of VBT, currently under review.
Dr. Oh sees patients at CUIMC/Neurological Institute of New York and The Children’s Hospital of New York, with plans to start seeing patients at Weill Cornell.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Taemin Oh.
